Public charging in Belgium: how it works and what it costs

Everything about public charge points in Belgium: the difference between AC and DC, how the price is built up, which charging card you need and how to request a charger in your street.

Driving electric without a driveway or garage? Then the public charging network is your lifeline. The good news: that network is expanding fast in Belgium, and in most municipalities there is now a charge point within walking distance. The less good news: prices, cards and charging speeds vary wildly. This guide covers what actually matters.

Two kinds of public charge points

Public charge points fall into two broad categories, and the difference determines both your waiting time and your bill.

AC chargers (alternating current) are the familiar kerbside posts, car park units and shopping centre chargers. They typically deliver 11 kW or 22 kW. Your car’s on-board charger decides how much of that you actually get: a car limited to 7.4 kW will not charge any faster on a 22 kW post. Expect several hours for a full battery — which is exactly why AC charging works best alongside something else: sleeping, working, shopping.

DC fast chargers (direct current) bypass the on-board charger and feed the battery directly. Anything from 50 kW counts as fast charging; along the motorway you will find 150 to 350 kW. Here you are counting minutes, not hours. Fast charging costs more per kWh and puts more stress on the battery, so use it for trips rather than as a daily routine.

What does a charging session cost?

The price at a public charger is rarely a single number. Three parties shape it:

  1. The charge point operator (the CPO) sets the base rate per kWh.
  2. Your charging card provider (the MSP) adds a margin, and sometimes a session fee or subscription.
  3. The type of charging: DC is structurally more expensive than AC, and some chargers add an idle fee per minute once your car is full but still plugged in.

In practice this means the same charger can cost noticeably different amounts depending on which card you tap. So compare not just the charger, but your card. Ad-hoc charging with a bank card or QR code is usually the most expensive option — useful as a fallback, not as a habit.

Watch out for that idle fee, too. At busy locations the meter switches to per-minute billing after a set period, to stop a full car from occupying the bay. Set a timer if you are using a charger in a shopping street.

Which charging card do you need?

Virtually every public charger in Belgium is accessible through roaming: your card does not have to come from the operator running the charger. In practice, pick based on how you actually charge:

  • Mostly charging locally on AC? Choose a card with no fixed subscription and a competitive AC rate.
  • Doing a lot of long-distance driving? A subscription with a DC discount pays for itself quickly.
  • Regularly driving abroad? Check coverage and foreign rates before you leave.

Many EV drivers keep two cards on hand, simply because no single provider has the best price and the best coverage everywhere. A second card usually costs nothing as long as no subscription is attached.

Requesting a charger in your street

Living in Flanders with no way to charge at home? The “paal volgt wagen” (charger follows car) principle lets you request a public charge point in your neighbourhood. You apply through your municipality or the regional portal; if the location is technically feasible and there is no charger nearby, one gets installed. Brussels and Wallonia run comparable rollout programmes, each with its own regional procedure.

Allow several months: a technical study, a grid connection and a road-signage file are all involved. Submit your request as soon as you know you are going electric, not on the day the car arrives.

Five practical tips

  1. Plan around power, not distance. One twenty-minute stop at 150 kW beats two stops at 50 kW.
  2. Charge to 80% on the road. The last 20% takes disproportionately long as the charging curve tapers off.
  3. Check the connector first. Most cars in Belgium use Type 2 for AC and CCS for DC — older CHAdeMO models find fewer and fewer chargers.
  4. Look at the setup. A post with two charge points is often shared: with two cars connected, the available power can be halved.
  5. Check the status before you leave. A broken or occupied charger costs you more time than a five-kilometre detour.
